Mercedes-Benz has always been a pioneer of innovative automotive technologies. For example, in 1959 Mercedes-Benz made history with its "tail-fin" model, which was the first production vehicle with safety passenger cell and crumple zones.

The new S-Class confirms the Mercedes-Benz position as a pioneer. With an improved DISTRONIC PLUS system including BAS PLUS, not to mention a wide range of innovative comfort and convenience features, Mercedes-Benz once again sets a new standard.

The 2007 S-Class. The evolution of an icon.

S550 New Generation V-8 Engine

Making its debut in the S550 models is a new-generation V-8 engine, which develops maximum power of 382 hp and maximum torque of 391 lb-ft. The increased performance over the previous V-8 is startling. The development engineers analyzed the airflow to and from the cylinders using sensors in the intake and exhaust ports. On the basis of the results, they were then able to optimize the shape of the ports and, by extension, the airflow, resulting in an impressive increase in output while at the same time keeping down emissions.

7G-TRONIC – A Perfect Match.

The industry’s first 7-speed automatic transmission creates an ideal relationship with the S550 models delivering power with exceptional fluidity.1 This close-ratio, seven-speed design means that gear changes are virtually imperceptible. The 7G-TRONIC is operated by means of the DIRECT SELECT steering-column gear selector. A mode selector switch also allows you to choose between two different modes: Comfort and Sport. In Comfort mode, the transmission shifts up sooner and a more comfortable suspension setting is adopted, while the Sport mode offers up a more dynamic suspension setting with upshifts occurring at higher rpm.

To make even the longest journey in the S-Class an experience to savour, we’ve made further improvements to the optional multi-contour seats. In addition to the air chambers in the lumbar region of the backrest, you can now also adjust the shoulder region of the backrest, along with the side bolsters, to make the seat fit you like a glove. The individual zones can be precisely adjusted using the COMAND system.

The multi-contour seats are also fully integrated in the PRE-SAFE positioning system. This means that if an accident risk is detected, not only do the seats automatically adjust to an upright position, but the air chambers are inflated as well, thus keeping the occupants firmly secured.

The optional Drive-Dynamic multi-contour seat1 takes things further still. In addition to offering individual adjustment, this seat also features dynamic side bolsters on the seat cushion and on the backrest which inflate and deflate automatically under cornering, keeping you firmly in your seat even on the tightest curves.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then you can begin to enjoy the massage function, with its seven massage chambers and four different program settings. The massage function generates a rolling movement, which keeps the back muscles continuously stimulated. Rear passengers can also enjoy a massage if you choose the optional multi-contour rear seats with massage function.

Climate control settings that all have one aim: comfort for you and your passengers.

The "Grand Mercedes" 600 model, which came out in 1963, included the world’s first fully featured automatic climate control system. With this system the company quickly made its name as a pioneer in the area of comfort and convenience. Carrying on this same tradition, a further improved automatic climate control system maintains ideal temperatures in the new S-Class. As before, different temperatures can be selected for each of the four seats. But now however, three new automatically controlled ventilation modes have been added, which can be selected to suit individual requirements. On top of that, there are a total of 21 air outlets to allow every passenger the exact temperature they desire.

COMAND is now mounted directly in your line of view.

For the new S-Class, we have further improved the COMAND system and taken its excellent ergonomics to new levels. The COMAND controller and the COMAND function buttons are situated close to hand on the centre console, while all the relevant information about the functions you are currently adjusting appears on the COMAND display. This high-resolution eight-inch colour display has now been moved to a position more directly in your line of view – so you can always see exactly what you’re doing.

Multi-function Display

Tap the steering wheel-mounted controls and you can view displays such as a trip computer and the outside temperature, program and operate vehicle settings, access your mobile phone book, or simply adjust the audio system.

Musicians may get jealous.

The harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround sound system for the S-Class offers a new dimension in listening pleasure, allowing you to recreate a concert-hall experience at the press of a button. The stunning sound quality is due to a 600-watt 13-channel DSP amplifier, which powers 14 strategically distributed high-performance loudspeakers. Aided by Dolby Digital 5.1, you get a full three-dimensional sound experience. The surround sound system also features a world first: fully digital sound processing with DVD-audio and DTS capabilities. The processor controls the reproduction of soundtracks and effects in such a way as to bring out the full dynamic range and the most subtle nuances.

Safety

A bright idea for dark roads.

You’re driving on a dark road at night. In the distance you can vaguely make out what you think may be an animal crossing the road up ahead. But until you get closer, you can’t be sure. With the Night View Assist system, there’s no second-guessing. This optional feature addresses this potentially hazardous situation by allowing you to see obstacles long before you have to react to them.

Night View Assist illuminates the road with infrared headlamps whose light beam is invisible to the human eye. The scene monitored by the infrared camera is projected as a greyscale image onto an eight-inch multifunction display in the instrument cluster. This image is similar to what you would see through the windscreen – with full-beam illumination.

Distronic Plus

In 1999, Mercedes-Benz developed the DISTRONIC proximity control system to make driving in busy traffic less stressful. Now, our improved version, the optional DISTRONIC PLUS1 system, automatically helps you maintain a safe following distance even in stop-and-go traffic.

Eight Air Bags

The 2007 S-Class is equipped with eight air bags, including two window curtain air bags whose protection zone covers the entire area of the side windows. A lot of development work has also gone into the deployment sensors for the front air bags. For example, the weight of the front passenger is taken into account when deciding how many air bag stages should be deployed. And if the seat occupancy sensor detects that the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the front passenger air bag and the side-impact air bag and belt tensioner on that side of the vehicle are not activated.
