smart fortwo cabriolet
| Get outside and enjoy yourself with a smart fortwo cabriolet. All the advantages of the coupe, plus endless sun and fresh air |
Design
| You'll only find unusual solutions by asking unusual questions. "open your mind" is a call to question the status quo and to see it as offering challenges, rather than imposing boundaries. This is what the smart brand is about, with each model embodying a new departure as demonstrated by such unusual and unique cars as the smart fortwo coupe and cabriolet. |
| |
| Concept |
This new direction gives drivers exactly what they really need: an efficient, effective, and enjoyable way to get from home to work to play. No more, no less.
Logical.
Most of the time, people drive around with just the newspaper or a gym bag on the back seat. Our response: Do away with the back seats. |
A car for two people.
On average, a car carries only 1.2 occupants to work. We thought we'd be generous and build a car for 2.0 commuters. |
Easy access.
The doors on a smart fortwo open wide, making it easy for you to climb in and out. And, with high, comfortable seats, you don’t feel like you are in a small car at all. |
Focus forward.
The orientation of the tridion safety cell and bodypanels shifts the focus towards the front of the car, giving the 2.5-metre-long fortwo a more “complete” shape. |
| |
| Bodypanels |
The smart fortwo bodypanels are the world's first standard bodypanel system, making them a truly unique feature. The bodypanels are made of scratch-proof polycarbonate plastic and are available in a range of moulded-in colours. They're recyclable and dent-resistant, they don't rust, and better still, completely exchangeable. Should any panel be badly damaged, you can replace it in next to no time. A complete bodypanel fresh-up takes barely two hours at your nearest smart Centre.
Time for a change.
smart boasts the world’s first standard bodypanel system. Whether you feel like changing colours or just need to replace a damaged panel, drive to your nearest smart Centre. |
Nothing to hide.
We haven’t hidden the tridion safety cell. Why should we? This is a safety feature that we’re proud of. Available in black or silver on the pulse and passion, it can be combined with bodypanels |
| |
| Space |
You'll be surprised by the spacious interior of the smart fortwo coupe. There's more than enough room for your weekly shopping or for luggage for a quick weekend getaway. And if you need even more space, the passenger seat can be folded down.
Lots of elbow room.
Inside, you and your passenger have ample space for a comfortable ride. The interior of the smart fortwo has been designed to give you maximum space and elbow room. It actually feels like you're sitting in a much larger car. |
A wave for added safety.
Thanks to the cleverly designed dashboard, the driver and passenger seats are slightly staggered to ensure that your vision is unrestricted. |
Everything in its place.
All of the switches, knobs, and buttons are exactly where they should be –- comfortably within your reach. And, the easy-to-read instrument cluster gives the information you need for a safe journey. |
Put it in back.
Practical. First open the top door – by radio remote control or manually from the inside – and then fold down the bottom door for easy loading. |
For even more room.
Transport large items easily by simply folding down the passenger seat for added carrying capacity. |
| |
| Details |
The unmistakable smart signature is visible in every detail. And it's the small things in life, and in the smart fortwo, that give us the most pleasure.
Convenient operation.
Because you need to turn the ignition key before you can drive off, the ignition lock is next to the gearshift rather than on the steering wheel. That’s logical, isn’t it? |
One for all.
Everything’s under control with the three-button key. Just stand in front of your smart fortwo and press a button: unlock the car, lock the car and activate the immobilizer, or unlock the luggage compartment. |
Eyes on the time (and revs).
The optional dash-mounted swivelling clock and rev counter aren’t just really cool; they’re also handy and functional. And, did we mention that they’re really cool? |
Finishing touches.
The interior materials are a distinctive mix of textiles and plastics. As you'd expect with a smart, the interior design is unique. And it goes without saying that up to 95% of the materials are recyclable. |
Smile.
The front end with radiator grille and headlamps characterize the “face” of the smart fortwo coupe: cheeky, open eyes, self-assured and clever. |
| |
Technical Features
If you want to pack in even more economy and environmental friendliness into your driving experience, the smart fortwo coupe cdi could be the right car for you.
Experience the power and torque of the smart fortwo coupe cdi, which shares technology also used in the Mercedes-Benz E 320's inline-6 diesel engine.
| |
| Engine |
The smart fortwo cdi features a compact rear-mounted engine that provides high performance, low fuel consupmtion, and low emissions.
cdi engine data.
Displacement: 799 cc
Net power: 40 hp @ 4,200 rpm
Net torque: 74 lb-ft @ 1,800 - 2,800 rpm
Acceleration, 0-100 km/h²: 19.8 seconds
Maximum speed³: 135 km/h |
Common rail.
cdi stands for “common rail direct injection” and in expert circles, it is synonymous with a quantum leap in engine technology.
A central high-pressure pump generates an extremely high maximum pressure of 1,350 bar in the common fuel line -- the common rail -– and at the injection nozzles. In addition, an electronic control system ensures that the fuel is injected into the combustion chambers in ultra-fine doses. The advantage: clean, maximum-efficiency combustion. |
Fit for the fast lane.
Small, efficient and all set for the fastlane. The turbo diesel engine with common rail direct injection produces plenty of torqueeven at low revs. The maximum torque is an impressive 79.8 lb-ft at 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. You’ll soon notice the difference on steep hills. |
| |
| Transmission |
The reengineered, sequential, 6-speed transmission offers driving pleasure, agility and comfort.
softip – changing gear without using the clutch.
The standard sequential 6-speed transmission allows you to downshift and upshift by simply nudging the shift lever up or down from the drive position, without a clutch. When you come to a stop, the car automatically shifts into first gear. |
softouch – the automatic gear program.
The softouch automatic gear program with kickdown function is available as an option on all models. It is designed to respond perfectly to various driving conditions. And for a sportier driving style you can switch to softip at the touch of a button for manual gear changing without any clutch work.
Steering wheel gearshift.
The steering wheel gearshift function on the 3-spoke leather sport steering wheel allows you to change gear by means of shift paddles, without taking your hands off the wheel – in true Formula 1 style. Standard on the pulse, and available as an option on the passion. |
| |
| Electronics |
With features like a electronic monitoring system, crash sensor, and automatic headlight shutoff, your smart fortwo does a lot more than just get you from A to B.
Signal control and evaluation module.
Each smart fortwo comes equipped with a signal control and evaluation module, which is essentially the smart’s electronic “brain”. Networked to all of the car’s critical functions, this electronic monitor automatically performs on-board diagnoses and alerts you to detected irregularities. Information on these irregularities is also stored in the monitor’s memory to help service staff better analyze your car’s performance. |
Automatic headlight shut-off.
When you remove the key from the ignition of your smart fortwo, the headlights automatically turn off. |
Signal indicators with lane changer function.
For more convenient lane changing, tapping on the turn-signal lever causes the signal indicators to flash three times in the direction you want to go. |
Service interval indicator.
The service interval indicator calculates when your next service appointment is due based on your usage profile. Longer trip mileage and fewer cold starts increase the service interval. Frequent cold starts and short trips shorten the time between service visits. |
Crash sensor.
If you are in an accident, the hazard warning lights and interior lighting are immediately switched on. |
| |
| Roof |
Maybe it's the way your hair blows in the wind. Maybe it's because life feels just a little bit better when you're basking in the sun. Either way, smart fortwo cabriolet drivers always drive with a smile.
The secret: a button that automatically opens up the weatherproof and car wash-proof folding sunroof.
tritop L.
The touch of a button is all it takes to open the adjustable tritop convertible roof. You decide how much sun you’d like. |
tritop XL.
For even more fresh air and sun, simply release the tritop convertible roof electronically and it will fold down. Then, push it down by hand until the rear top locks. |
tritop XXL.
And for the complete cabriolet experience, remove the roof bars and stow them away in the tailgate. Now, there is nothing between you and the sky and sun. |

Safety
Since 1939, DaimlerChrysler AG has engaged in research to increase the safety of its products. Engineers have consistently succeeded in setting new standards in the field of safety technology. Optimal passenger safety is one of the fundamental principles of the DaimlerChrysler AG corporate philosophy.
In 1994, smart gmbh began to develop the first fortwo coupe. As a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG, the safety philosophy and high standards of the parent company are also rigidly enforced here. And now, a true challenge: Achieve the same level of safety in a car that measures only 2.5 metres.
Thanks to a combination of years of experience, intensive research and development, and an extensive series of crash tests, the crash management system was developed. This system allows small cars to be every bit as safe as their larger counterparts.
| |
| Design |
Yes, the smart fortwo is a small car. It is also a very safe car. In addition to the many active and passive safety features, the construction of the smart fortwo provides excellent all-around protection for passengers.
Tridion safety cell.
In a collision, the tridion safety cell acts like a shield to protect you and your passenger. The reinforced, rigid steel frame absorbs much of the impact energy. In addition, the cell’s transverse and lateral struts transfer some impact to the crumple zones of the other vehicle involved in the collision. |
Sandwich-type construction.
The smart fortwo’s engine and transmission are located underneath the passenger compartment. In a collision, the engine slides under the passenger compartment and not towards the car’s occupants. |
Crash absorbing elements.
The smart fortwo has two crash absorbing elements, one in the front and one in the rear. These structural components and the smart’s polycarbonate body panels absorb the force sustained during low-speed collisions (up to 3 km/h) with virtually no sign of damage. In collisions up to 15 km/h, the crash boxes serve as crumple zones, ensuring that the tridion safety cell remains undamaged. |
Wheel buffer.
The compact design and ultra-short wheelbase of your smart fortwo actually enhance its overall safety. The front wheels are mounted on solid lateral supports that help to absorb the force of a front impact, allowing the passenger compartment to avoid damage and the doors to still open easily. In a side impact, the other vehicle will often hit a wheel, allowing the suspension components to absorb some of the force of the impact. |
Reinforced doors.
Aluminium struts in the doors absorb side-impact energy, ensuring all-around protection for occupants. These struts also distribute the impact energy giving the side air bags more time to deploy. |
| |
| Active |
Before the tridion safety cell and the crash management system have a chance to prove what the can do, we've built in active damage prevention features to help prevent an accident in the first place.
electronic stability program (esp®).
esp® sensors detect when your fortwo is about to swerve, and instantly applies the brakes to individual wheels and adjusts engine power to stabilize the car. The smart fortwo is the only micro-compact car to offer this system as a standard feature. |
abs with electronic brake-force distribution.
abs prevents wheel lockup during emergency braking, enabling you to properly steer your smart fortwo, even on wet or snow-covered roads. An integral part of abs, electronic brake-force distribution balances the braking forces between the front and rear axle to prevent either end from locking. |
Cornering Brake Control (CBC).
The load on your wheels varies greatly during hard cornering. CBC improves vehicle stability by applying the most effective brake pressure to each wheel, allowing you to maintain control of the vehicle. |
brake assist (bas)
In an emergency, Brake Assist senses panic stopping by the speed at which you depress the brake pedal and automatically applies all available braking boost immediately. By helping to eliminate the delay caused by human nature, Brake Assist can potentially reduce stopping distances when it matters most. |
Acceleration skid control.
In slippery conditions where the drive wheels could start spinning, acceleration skid control brakes the wheel most at risk to avoid loss of traction. Power can then be re-directed to another wheel with more traction, a function similar to that of a differential lock. Meanwhile, nengine torque control prevents instability when downshifting on slippery roads by a slight, automatic acceleration or disengaging of the clutch. |
Hill holder.
With the fortwo’s hill holder functionality, you'll never have to apply the handbrake again when pulling away on a slope. After lifting your foot from the brake pedal, the wheels remain braked for 0.7 seconds giving you more than enough time to move your foot to the accelerator without rolling backwards. |
| |
| Passive |
In an accident, the smart fortwo's solid construction provides structural integrity, but it is the many passive safety features that truly protect the passengers.
Dual front and side air bags.
All models are equipped with standardfull-size front air bags. In addition, the fortwo, unlike many of its competitors, comes standard with side air bags for enhanced protection from side impact. |
Internal safety distance.
Even with the smart fortwo's compact design, the driver and passenger sit well back in the vehicle, distanced from the effects of a front impact. |
Collapsible steering column.
In the event of a serious front-end collision, the steering column will retract telescopically out of harm’s way. |
Seat belt tensioners and belt force limiters.
In a severe impact, the belt tensioner will automatically tighten the seat-belts in just a few milliseconds, ensuring that both the driver and passenger remain firmly secure in their seat. The belt force limiters then carefully loosen the belt to reduce pressure on the chest. |
Safety seats with integrated seat-belts.
The seats in the fortwo ensure that you don’t just sit comfortably, you are also well protected. They have a modular metal made of sheet steel that helps absorb the force of an impact. Head restraints are also integrated into the seats to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries in a collision. |
| |
| Crash Tests |
The smart fortwo's unique crash management system makes it one of the safest cars in the micro-compact car segment. The smart fortwo's superior passive safety has been confirmed by more than 50 crash tests carried out in accordance with the same rigorous standards as the Mercedes Car Group. In every test, the strength and rigidity designed into the tridion safety cell provided greater occupant safety than in other small cars.
