Volkswagen Touareg 2

Volkswagen Touareg 2

Overview

For over 60 years we’ve dedicated ourselves to making some of the most capable off-road vehicles in the world. From the early Kdf-Wagons and the amphibious Schwimmwagen to the Baja Bug and the Thing all the way to today’s Touareg 2 we’ve seen our fair share of mud, dust and finish lines. The Touareg 2, nipped, tucked and re-tuned with a new look and capabilities upgrade, has raised the game in the off-road racing world once again. We build every Volkswagen with performance enhancing engineering and the Touareg 2’s enhanced with a healthy dose of OGT, Off-Road German Technology. Is it cheating? It might look that way with 3 top ten finishers at both the 2006 and 2007 Dakar Rallies, winning the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and besting every Baja pro-truck at the 2006 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. We just wanted to build the most off-road worthy vehicle possible.

You’ve Got a Backbone. The Touareg 2’s Got 4XMOTION

4XMOTION Without it, a Touareg 2 would just be an ordinary SUV. This highly evolved four-wheel-drive system is always engaged. Sensors detect which tires have more traction, and automatically send extra power to those tires. If all four tires are getting even traction, the system distributes power equally to each tire for normal driving.
Centre Differential Lock Navigating tricky off-road race situations can call for a little extra power. By engaging the centre differential lock you can ensure that 100% of the available power is distributed evenly between the front and rear axle. You’ll also appreciate it on snowy roads, wet surfaces and other daily nonrace conditions.
Rear Differential Lock Let’s be honest, in certain off-road situations you might find yourself spinning your wheels as they say. This is a good time to engage the optional rear differential lock. This enables all available power to be sent to one wheel. It will help get you out of non-sticky situations.

Fording Depth We make a big deal about the Touareg 2’s ability to ford 580 mm* of water with available air suspension because it is a big deal. And you’ll be sure to appreciate it when the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and there’s a stream bisecting that line. Towing Capacity If you want to tow a big thing, or several big things, the Touareg 2’s 3,500 kg towing capacity is ready for the job. Ask a Jumbo Jet — the Touareg pulled one.

*Maximum fording depth of Touareg 2 equipped with optional air suspension set in its highest level. NEVER enter water that has a current, or where you do not know the depth.

35-Degree Lateral Inclination The Touareg 2 can drive at a 35-degree lateral inclination, making even the trickiest maneuvers possible. Plus, it’s a great way to impress your passengers.
4-Wheel Independent Suspension Each wheel has its own suspension, so there is no long axle bar. When driving over rocky or uneven terrain, even if one wheel becomes suspended off the ground the other three will stay in contact with the ground — meaning each wheel conquers the terrain independently of the other wheels. The places you travel can be rocky, but your ride won’t be. DARPA Race Note: The computer driven Stanley won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, by being the first driverless vehicle to ever cross the 212 km Mojave Desert course.

Interior

Instrument Cluster This multi-function display has all your important instruments exactly where you need to hear, see and feel them. Plus, the signature blue and red lights help fulfill those fighter pilot fantasies you’ve been suppressing.
Trip Computer Whether you’re headed across the Rockies or just across town, you can track your average speed, fuel consumption and distance to empty. Plus, it can be customized to program your interior lighting.
Multi-Function Steering Wheel At your fingertips: stereo, cruise control and your trusty honker, “Out of the way, Mr. Mountain goat!”
REST Button The Touareg 2 is field-tested in the hottest and coldest conditions. The REST button was born from the latter. The residual heat from the engine gets rerouted through the dash, keeping the interior cabin warm approximately 45 minutes after you turn the engine off. Your toes will thank you.

The DVD-based Navigation System (Technology Package) covers all of Canada and the United States. And it can tell you where you are at any time. But what if you travel outside of the mapped area? Well, we thought of that too. The Touareg 2 will track any route you’ve taken, whether you’re on the satellite or not, and remember it so you can always find your way home. It’s called breadcrumb technology. Get it? Rearview Camera (Technology Package) See what’s sneaking up behind you in the woods with this built-in rearview camera. Not only do you see video while in reverse, but graphic lines help indicate the Touareg 2’s backing path. Volkswagen Touareg 2

Air Suspension (Execline) With the turn of this dial, the air suspension can be raised to maximize off-road capabilities. At highway speeds, it automatically lowers itself by 25 mm (when set at normal ride height of 220 mm) to improve handling and wind resistance. What’s more, with the damping control feature you can program the air suspension to fit the kind of ride you’re seeking. Auto is your standard setting. Comfort is for a softer ride, and sport is for those enthusiasts looking to feel every nook and cranny of the road.
High-Range Gear This setting gives you superior on-road performance by optimizing all of the Touareg 2’s horsepower (AKA 0–100 km/h). Of course that leaves little of the Touareg 2 powerful torque for taking on tough terrain. We recommend you leave that job for low range.
Low-Range Gear This gear is specifically for off-road conquest, climbing and pulling. When engaged, the low-range gear changes the power output from horsepower to pure torque so you can carry the load. We don’t recommend trying to go fast when in low gear, leave that for high range.
Keyless Access with Start/Stop (V8 Execline) Simply carry the remote key somewhere on you and your Touareg 2 will unlock with a touch of the door handle. To start it, just step on the brake and push the Start/Stop button (guess how you stop it). And when you want to lock all the doors on your way out, just press the black button on the handle and the doors will automatically lock. The key never has to leave your pocket. Or purse. Or fishing tackle box.

Performance & Safety

Safe happens.
Front & Rear Side Curtain Protection®
Airbags* deploy down the roofline from the A-pillar to the C-pillar to help reduce head and upper torso injury in the event of side impact. Dual front and front side airbags, driver and passenger — deploy within a tenth of a second.

Engine Braking Assist (EBA)
Works together with the engine’s information system and ABS Plus to stop the wheels from locking up if acceleration suddenly stops during sharp braking. This also helps prevent wheel slippage. Perfect for those times a furry little critter darts in front of your Touareg 2.

Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP)
This program continuously makes sure the direction you’re steering and the direction the Touareg 2 is headed are one and the same. If you have too much momentum, it works with the ABS Plus to automatically keep you on a normal driving path.

Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)
EDL will detect precisely when an individual wheel starts to lose traction
and apply brake force to wheels without traction. This helps avoid wheel
spin at lower speeds and helps keep things under control.

Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA)
HBA identifies whether you’re braking under normal circumstances or in an emergency. If it senses emergency pressure, HBA will generate all available brake force to help reduce stopping distance.

Fully Galvanized Sheet Metal
Ever notice that you never see a rusted out VW on the road? That’s because all
of the body panels on a Volkswagen are built with fully galvanized steel. Which
helps prevent rust or whatever else may be caused by unknown city sludge.

ABS Plus
Yes. Plus. We’ve helped shorten the braking distance on loose roadbeds by up to 20 percent. It’s a world first. How did we do it? The Touareg 2 is designed to push a portion of the road bed material under the temporarily locked wheels. A type of chock is formed as road debris builds. This enhances the braking function and shortens the braking distance without negative effects on steerability.

Anti-Slip Regulation Traction Control (ASR)
Helps prevent wheel slips at all speeds. This is done through a controlled intervention of the engine management system.

Stabilizer Bars
Stable is good. Placed on the front and rear suspension, these bars minimize your VW’s tilt in a sharp turn — again, giving you better control of your vehicle and letting you stop quicker.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
This varies the amount of braking pressure between all four wheels to optimize braking. You wouldn’t use your front brakes if you were mountain biking down a hill would you? It’s the same principle here.

Electronic Parking Assistance (Highline/Execline)
The Touareg 2 is built to handle the toughest of places, like city parking. With the Electronic Parking Assistance, sensors provide visual and acoustic signals to let you know if you’re getting too close to an object.

Safety Cage Construction
Thanks to our unibody construction, inside every VW, a specially reinforced safety cage with anti-intrusion side door beams is designed to keep you safe, while the outside “crumples” around you. This is one instance you won’t mind feeling caged in...

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
(Optional) is improved for ’08. Every 30 seconds, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System checks if any tire is losing air. And through a warning indicator on the instrument panel, you’ll be the first to know if a tire is low on air. Well, second to know. Just after the Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

Five 3-point safety belts and four height adjustable ones. Safety belts with pre-tensioners for all four outboard seating positions. For the front passengers, safety belts with load limiters.

Rear head restraints even for the middle passenger — help minimize whiplash injuries from rear-end collisions.

*Airbags are supplemental restraints only and will not deploy under all accident circumstances. Always use safety belts and seat children only in the rear, using restraint systems appropriate for their size and age.

Bi-Xenon Headlights with AFS II
(Standard on Highline and Execline) More energy efficient than halogen, they emit a powerful bluish-white light. Also, all bi-xenon headlights feature a built-in leveling and steerable light system. They turn as you turn. So whether you’re on the road or off it, you’ll better see what’s around the corner.

*American model shown. Not available in Canada.

Side Mirrors
These mirrors have integrated side blinkers so other drivers know where you’re going. They’re heatable so ice won’t block your view. And they can be adjusted in unison to save you time.

Pikes Peak Race Note: In order to win at Pikes Peak in 2006, we had to make some modifications. We added stickers.

Leatherette Seating Surfaces (V6 Comfortline only)
The leatherette is as comfortable as leather. Your epidermis won’t know the difference.
Volkswagen Touareg 2
Cricket Leather Seating Surfaces (Highline/Execline)
Hand selected to feel good to the touch and the tush.
Volkswagen Touareg 2
Anthracite Leatherette and Cricket Leather Seating Surfaces
Not quite black, not quite gray, but quite attractive in pretty much any Touareg 2.
Volkswagen Touareg 2
Pure Beige Leatherette and Cricket Leather Seating Surfaces
Your classic interior beige. Like the rolling sand dunes your Touareg 2 loves to play in.

Sienna (Cricket Leather only. V8 Highline/Execline)
The deep rich brown goes perfectly with just about any shade of mud.
